Since we had Wild West Campaign few months ago maybe we could turn our heads 180 degrees and focus on the East this time Far East.

Far East as a term describes East and Southeast Asia. This region was and still is very intriguing and colorful. Diversity of cultures makes this region a perfect subject for figure painters.

1. Figure must portray Far East inhabitant from any era.
(Far East includes current territories of China, Hong Kong, Maceau, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan. Allowed but not recommended are: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malysia, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Russian Far East.)
2. Any era
3. Any scale, busts are allowed

Hi Alan! Could you be more specific?
Do you mean someone like John Blackthorne, Nathan Algren, or Anna Leonowens?
I'd prefare native inhabitants of Far East, but since we're all brothers under the Sun I think that I'd allow the foreigners, provided that their clothes (armor etc) suit the Far East culture.

Did my answer make the situation better or worse?

John Blackthorn was awesome. Anjin-San. Though I always like Yabu and Omi for some reason. Had such a crush on Mariko-san when I was a kid.

I'm planning on a Samurai or Ninja I think for this one.

Andrzej and Aaron,

I was thinking about a chindit.

Aaron says "John Blackthorn was awesome. Anjin-San. Though I always like Yabu and Omi for some reason. Had such a crush on Mariko-san when I was a kid." While I don't doubt that this is all true, I've never heard of any of them!

What can it all mean? Apart from the obvious: I'm a bit plugged out!

If a chindit is no good I'd have a Japanese thing,

Alan

Alan,

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the chindit from India? That is definately Middle East, not the Far East. Allowing them in this campaing basing on their presence in the Far East during the WW2 would create precedence allowing i.e. American soldiers from Iwo Jima to be depicted in this campaing - they came to Far East in the same way.

John Blackthorne was (as Aaron mentioned) character from novel and 1980 TV series Shogun - he was a British pilot working for Dutch trade ships who was imprisoned by Lord Toranaga's people (Toranaga's story is loosly based on Tokugawa Ieasu's story) but later becomes valued member of Toranaga's court. Blacthorne learns a lot about Japanese culture and feels great respect to this culture and people he now lives with.
Nathan Algren's story was depicted in "Last Samurai" - 2003 movie starring Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise. Algren is American Civil War veteran asked to train Japanese army against the samurai members of upraising against pro-western reforms introduced by newfangled goverment. Algren is imprisoned and held by upraising leader. Again he learns about Japanese culture and traditions and finds himself closer to samurai way of life than his western ways.
The film's plot was inspired by the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion led by Saigō Takamori.

Anna Leonowens - the character from The King and I... story once again showing clash of western and eastern cultures. Only this time I have a feeling that eastern culture is shown as a inferior to western civilisation, shown as a "modern one"

In short words:
YES for inhabitants of Far East
NO for invaders from outside of Far East even if depicted on Iwo Jima.
YES for Blackthorne and Algren in traditional Japanese clothing
Rather NO Leonowens for reasons mentioned before.

pheeew....

I might join in if time allows with a WWII Japanese figure or a modern Japanese soldier. It would be something out of the ordinary - for me at least.

Allowed but not recommended are: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malysia, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Russian Far East.

Just curious as to why these are not recommended? I am thinking of a Viet-Cong vignette.

Just wondering. Thank you.

Good question Randy.
Main group of interest (China, Japan, Mongolia, Macau, Hong Kong, Koreas, and Taiwan) are countries located in East Asia and are countries under strongest influence of Chinese culture.

The second group includes countries that although placed in the east of Asia are considered to be also under strong influence of culture coming from India and Pacific.
Indochinese peninsula is on the one side of the group and the far north-east of Russia is on the other - Kamchatka, Chukotka etc.
Due to the geographical location I included these in the campaign and feel free to choose from Itelmens, Koryaks or other people indigenous to this area - they sure make great subject for figure painting .
On the other hand you must agree that their culture is not what we're used to consider a Far Eastern culture.

A little long explenation but I do hope it clears the things.

Hey guys - some interesting ideas being discussed here. I've had to un-enlist due to having nothing suitable in the stash right now as well as having too numerous campaigns for this year.

I'll try to follow along, as I'm into historical figures. Naturally if $omething come$ up I'll rejoin the fun!

Cheers Dave
