Introduction

Italian Masterclass miniatures has released 2 Wild West kits with cinematic relation to actor characters . This one is the “bigger” of the two called “Cowboys” and is a direct recreation of the duet Bud Spencer and Terence Hill as they appeared at their Western series of films.

The release code is MCF – 54018 and the kit is including 2 54mm mounted cow boy in white metal .

The kit is sculpted from the well known miniature sculptor Stefano Sartorello and the box art version of the vignette is painted by Italian painter Ellio Stella .

The kit

The kit comes in one big box , and is not light weight at all ! And some of it is because of the 2 big ground base pieces, and of course the horses. The packing method of Masterclass is safe enough. This means that the 51 (48 for the 2 mounted figures and 3 for the base) kit parts are really well protected in 3 small plastic bags, sandwitched between thick foam sheets, and finally putted in a hard carton box .

Some lead foil for the horse reins is included .

Outside of the box a colored sleeve including the box art painting pictures at the front and the back of the box is wrapping it.

Theme and Pose

This duet is highly recognizable, and they are riding at relaxed poses, and especially Terence Hill’s figure that’s is almost sleeping laying back at the saddle

This definitely makes a nice and humorous scene, with direct movies reference , and I guess it will be appreciated from many modelers , especially the ones that like western subjects

The figures are really well proportioned, and the likeness with the actors is really good , if we consider also the scale. Especially Bud Spencer’s face is really pretty close to the actor’s look !

The figures are not strictly 54mm as of other companies , but more close to 63mm so that’s good for the modelers that prefer bigger figure size .

Quality and Detail

The kit has the good quality of previous Masterclass releases, and the modeler will breathe in relief once he opens the box . The white metal quality is nice , with clean surface and the casting is also at very good level.

Inspecting the kit , I was happy enough , since the kit did not need much work for cleaning or putty work . Of course as most mounted kits, some putty will be used when joining the two halves of the horses .

Maybe mold lines are evident on the sides of the parts , but also they look soft and they will be eliminated easily with a new blades soft passing.

As always to have a the perfect finish you must perform a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and is ready to prime.

The sculpted detail is crisp and intense enough . And that is good for me ! All parts are enough detailed and even if the kit needs enough work to assembly and paint , I think that the finally result will definitely deserve it .

The horses do look nice , with good anatomy and good size for the scale maybe more to the slimmest side in comparison with some other companies .

Now more details as the hanging, frying pan, the hanging boot , and the cow skull on the ground , are small things that we all wish to see on our kit purchase. And here they are included . So smile !

Painting

As most Wild West subjects , this is a relatively “free” kit for painting , and that’s good . After you check all film references and pick your choice for the clothe schemes you can also pick the horse’s colors. Taking in consideration the era and subject I guess many of us would use earth related colors, such as browns, ochres, and a lot of dust for final weathering touch.

This vigniette including 2 mounted figures, definitely cannot be assigned to a total beginner. But since they are not soldiers with complicated uniforms (f.e. Napoleonics) many painters would try .

So I really can not consider it a difficult kit for painting . But it will take many hours of pleasure work to get it done .

Conclusion – Final Verdict

If you like Western themes , and also film characters recreated in miniatures, this is your chance ! One more from Masterclass as they also release the Western Colt kit , with just one character (this of Terence Hill)
The theme is nice, the detail and sculpting quality is high, and in general definitely will satisfy the modeler .

SUMMARY
Highs: Two well known cinema characters with success to likeness, good sculpting and casting, makes a nice pair for a vigniette. Western subjects lovers will enjoy it a lot .
Lows: Not really something . Maybe i would ask for a better likeness approach at the Terence Hill character since Bud, is reaaally good.

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...

Nice job on the review, Costas. If I were familiar withthe movies you reference, the kit would have more impact.
